Fat Joe has explained why he recently admitted to lying in the vast majority of his songs throughout his decades-long Hip-Hop career.
In an interview with Gayle King about the inclusion of lyrics (as evidence against Young Thug in the YSL RICO case), the Bronx native claimed that he—like many other rappers—often fabricates the truth in his music as a form of artistic license. “I’ve been rapping professionally for 30 years, and I’ve lied in almost 95 percent of my songs,” Joe told King. “I write what I feel that day. I’m just being creative.
”The Terror Squad leader’s comments garnered mixed reactions on social media, with some agreeing with Joe’s stance. Others suggested the lyrics that could potentially be used in the YSL case are tied to alleged crimes that are documented by the authorities and prosecution. The 53-year-old artist later took to Instagram to clarify the intent behind his statements, clapping back at those questioning his authenticity in light of his admission to lying in his music. “I had to say 95% of what I say is a lie so that they could understand that it’s unfair to try some kids for the rest of their life with sh*t they might have not done,” he explained.
“None of this sh*t is true. It’s creativity. It’s imagination. Those who know, know.” The self-proclaimed “elder statesmen” continued, adding, “If I say I use my creativity, my imagination in my music, don’t mean I ain’t lived a real f**king life in the streets.”
The YSL RICO trial is currently underway following a grueling jury selection process and numerous delays. Young Thug, among others, is charged with conspiracy to violate the state Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, as well as possession of drugs with intent to distribute, possession of firearms. He’s also been charged with three counts of being a person employed or associated with a criminal street gang to conduct or participate in criminal gang activity through the commission of a crime.
Young Thug has plead not guilty on all charges and maintains his innocence.
