Deadpool & Wolverine has become the first MCU (Marvel cinematic Universe)  movie since Spider-Man: No Way Home to reach $1 billion at the global box office.

The record-breaking movie held off It Ends With Us to continue leading the US box office with $54.6 million, and has now amassed $1.03 billion globally after only three weeks of release.

Deadpool & Wolverine is not yet the biggest R-rated movie ever, but it’s only a matter of time before it surpasses Joker‘s final $1.08 billion result.

It’s only the second R-rated movie to ever reach the huge milestone.

In terms of the wider MCU, Deadpool & Wolverine currently ranks as the 11th highest-grossing movie ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Next in its sights is Captain Marvel‘s $1.13 billion result.

At the US box office only, the movie now ranks as the sixth-biggest MCU movie of all time with $494.3 million, behind The Avengers‘ $623.4 million result.

The huge success of Deadpool & Wolverine has led to speculation about when we’ll see Reynolds back as Deadpool in the MCU. However, the star has been clear that this was never planned to be a set-up for another movie.

“This movie was made as a complete experience. It wasn’t meant to be a commercial for another movie. It wasn’t meant to be any of that stuff. And, I think I get a great deal of joy making a movie like that,” he explained.
