LL Cool J Refutes Rumours That The Notorious B.I.G.’s “Who Shot Ya?” Was A Diss Song Aiming Him

LL Cool J recently stopped by Shade 45โ€™s โ€œSway In The Morningโ€ to promote his upcoming Rock The Bells Festival, which takes place this Saturday (Aug. 5). He also spoke on his forthcoming album, ageism in hip hop, and more.

At one point, host Sway Calloway mentioned a previous interview where journalist Bonsu Thompson opened up about The Notorious B.I.G.โ€™s โ€œWho Shot Ya?โ€

According to him, the 1994 classic contained a shot at the Queens emcee. Thompson also claimed that LLโ€™s Mr Smith standout, โ€œI Shot Ya,โ€ was a response to the alleged diss. โ€œI need him to stick to his day job. And if that is his day job, he might wanna reassess that s**t,โ€

LL jokingly said in response to Thompsonโ€™s comments. โ€œNah, thatโ€™s not true. I was in the studio when Biggie wrote โ€˜Who Shot Ya?โ€™ Literally. Like, I was literally in the studio when he made the song.โ€ He continued by recalling a humorous memory from that very encounter. “

โ€œI said, โ€˜Yo, Biggie, why you smoke so much weed when you write your joints?โ€™ And it was at this time he was, I guess, still writing,โ€ the โ€œMama Said Knock You Outโ€ veteran explained. โ€œHe said, โ€˜It makes me feel like Iโ€™m in the track.โ€™ And we just started laughing.โ€

LL further drove the point home by bringing up additional moments with the late Brooklyn rapper and stressing how important competition was within hip-hop as a whole.

โ€œB.I.G. was my man, you know what Iโ€™m saying? I did โ€˜Flava In Ya Ear (Remix),โ€™ and we did that together. I used to see him at The Tunnel. Iโ€™d be like, โ€˜Yo, B.I.G., you good?โ€™ Heโ€™d [say], โ€˜Chillin!โ€™ He was just a great dude, and I liked him a lot. No, he wasnโ€™t taking a shot at me. He was doing what rappers do. He was saying whoever wants it can get it. Thatโ€™s regular.โ€
