Senegal Issues Ultimatum To Akon Over $6 Billion Akon City Project

The Senegalese government has delivered a formal ultimatum to R&B singer and entrepreneur Akon, demanding that he commence construction on his ambitious $6 billion Akon City project. The notice marks a critical juncture for the high-profile venture, which has yet to progress beyond the planning stage despite initial promises to transform the economically deprived region into a thriving urban hub.

The planned Akon City, envisioned as a model of modernity and sustainability, is designed to feature condominiums, office spaces, parks, a university, an ocean resort, and a 5,000-bed hospital. It aims to attract both tourists and investors to the area. Akon, who drew inspiration from the movie Black Panther and envisioned the city as a “real-life Wakanda,” promised a solar-powered, environmentally friendly metropolis utilizing blockchain and cryptocurrency technology, including his own Akoin cryptocurrency.

However, the project has faced significant delays, and local authorities are growing impatient. General Manager Serigne Mboup of Sapco-Senegal, the state entity responsible for coastal and tourism development, indicated that Akon risks losing 90% of the land allocated for the project if construction does not commence soon. The governmentโ€™s ultimatum follows reports that Akon has missed several payments to Sapco-Senegal, further complicating the project’s progress.

In August 2020, Akon had shared plans with international media, stating his intent to retire in the city. Yet, the project’s advancement has stalled, casting doubt on its realization. Akon’s team has announced that he will visit Senegal’s capital in the coming weeks to reassure stakeholders and address concerns about the project’s viability.

Despite the hurdles in Senegal, Akon has also announced intentions to build a second city in Uganda. The Ugandan government allocated one square mile of land to the singer in 2021. However, progress has been slow, with preliminary work hindered by resistance from local occupants and issues related to land surveyors.

As Akon faces mounting pressure to deliver on his promises, the future of Akon City remains uncertain. The upcoming developments will be closely watched by both local and international observers eager to see if the project can overcome its current challenges and move forward.
