Vybz Kartel Says Health Is Top Priority Following Release From Prison

Vybz Kartelย is focusing on getting his health right now thatย heโ€™s a free manย after spending over a decade behind bars.

The Jamaican dancehall legend was initially sentenced to life in prison in 2014 for the 2011 murder of Clive โ€œLizardโ€ Williams, butย his conviction was overturned earlier this yearย after serving 13 years.

Talking toย Fox 5 New Yorkโ€˜s Lisa Evers following his release last week, Kartel โ€“ who battles the auto-immune condition Gravesโ€™ Disease โ€“ revealed his post-prison plans.

โ€œHealthwise, you know Iโ€™m working on my health right now, but the feeling of just being free is just an amazing feeling,โ€ he said. โ€œI could be better, but Iโ€™m super upbeat.โ€

And as part of his new routine, heโ€™s already invested in a bike and a treadmill.

โ€œIโ€™ve hit the ground running,โ€ he added.

The โ€œSummertimeโ€ hitmaker suffered a number of health issues while locked up.

In June, Evers spoke to his attorney, Isat Buchanan, whoย revealed that Kartel needed medical help last year.

โ€œMr. Palmerโ€™s illness is actually life-threatening,โ€ he told the longtime New York journalist. โ€œHis neck was swollen, if you think of a shirt that is about 18.5 inches in the neck area, you couldnโ€™t close the collar on his neck and thatโ€™s how bad it is in this moment.โ€

He continued: โ€œHis face is actually swollen. And one other thing. He always wears glasses; in this condition, that causes his eyes to protrude.โ€

Kartel was kept in solitary confinement for up to 23 hours per day and his attorneys argued he was being prevented from getting clean air.

Jamaicaโ€™s Court of Appeal ruled on July 31 that Vybz Kartel (real name Adidja Azim Palmer), along with his co-defendants, will not face a retrial.

The singerโ€™s freedom was applauded by various figures in the Hip Hop world, most notablyย Drakeย โ€“ who posted a selfie of himself wearing one of the self-proclaimed King of Dancehallโ€™s shirts. He also wrote: โ€œBoss free up now.โ€

Nicki Minajย also welcomed Kartelโ€™s release, commenting on his Instagram page: โ€œWelcome home,โ€ whileย Busta Rhymesย โ€” who has worked with the Jamaican star on numerous songs โ€” added: โ€œWORL BOSS THE WORLD IS YOURS KING!! WELCOME HOME!!โ€

Swizz Beatz,ย Ty Dolla $ignย andย Young M.A.ย also left supporting comments.
