24thVGMA AOTY: Stonebwoy Criticizes The Media For Projecting Only 2 Acts

Stonebwoy has denounced the posture of traditional media for reducing the VGMA Artiste of the Year nomination to just two challengers every year when the list is announced.

Appearing as a guest on Tv3’s morning breakfast show, New Day, on Thursday, May 11, the ‘Into The Future’ vocalist used the platform to appeal to the media to extend its coverage of the Artiste of the Year category in a bid to promote a more inclusive atmosphere.

“When Artiste of the Year comes most often the conversation is narrowed to two people but as the media I think we can leave the narrowing to the fans,” he uttered.

The Artist of the Year category holds immense significance in Ghana’s music enterprise, embodying the apex of commendation for an act’s outstanding contributions.

Stonebwoy in communicating his opinion urge the media to widen its coverage and sustain its impartiality due to the significant role it played in shaping public discourse and thoughts.

“This what I believe that media is a very powerful tool and powerful institution that they should actually spread some attention in reviewing everyone in the category not just tailoring it to two people in the category because they are not the only two nominated,” he clarified

He therefore proceeded and elucidate that the limelight on the nominees becomes vital for media platforms to exhibit the diverse talents and accomplishments of all artists competing for the esteemed plaque even after the awards.

“Guess what that does, the fact they’ve been nominated actually tells the masses that Person A or B also did this and it doesn’t stop there after the awards everyone will get to know by the medium the media shared and remember what the others did and it stays on in their minds,”

Stonebwoy’s statement arrives at a period when the advocacy for Artiste of The Year is constricted down to just two of the frontrunners as was seen in the just-ended VGMA between Piesie Esther and Black Sherif retiring the likes of rapper Sarkodie, King Promise, Kidi, Stonebwoy, Camidoh and Joe Mettle tussling with tinier or no media exposure at all.
