Lauryn Hill has pulled off yet another surprise Fugees reunion. This time, she and her bandmates, Wyclef Jean and Pras Michel, reunited at the 2023 Global Citizen Festival for the second stop of Hill’s Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill 25th Anniversary Tour.
The New Jersey native was one of the headliners at this year’s festival, held on Saturday (Sept. 23) in New York City’s Central Park. Despite the inclement weather conditions caused by a tropical storm, the six-hour event enthralled attendees. The 48-year-old first performed six hits from her solo debut including “Everything Is Everything,” “Ex-Factor,” “Doo Wop (That Thing).” She then welcomed Jean and Michel to the stage to perform four of the group’s classics, Billboard reports.
They kicked off their joint set with “How Many Mics” before diving into “Ready Or Not,” “Killing Me Softly With His Song,” and their “victory lap” of “Fu-Gee-La.”
This reunion marks their second Global Citizen feat after joining Hill back in 2021, which was one of their first performances as a group in 15 years.
This Fugees surprise wasn’t the only one Global Citizen had up its sleeve.
Latto popped out during BTS’ Jung Kook’s set to perform their chart-topping record, “Seven,” and VIBE‘s Dec. 2021/Jan. 2022 cover star, D-Nice, brought out Big Daddy Kane, Rapsody, Busta Rhymes, and Common to continue the celebration of Hip-Hop’s 50th anniversary.
Following Michel’s guilty verdict in his federal conspiracy trial, fans weren’t sure about his participation as he’s currently awaiting sentencing in the matter. However, when dispelling claims that he wasn’t privy about Hill’s tour prior to the public announcement, his team expressed, “He is thrilled to be reuniting with his Fugees partners and looks forward to celebrating their music with fans across the globe.”
The Miseducation 25th Anniversary tour will hit Australia and New Zealand before returning to the U.S. in mid-October. It will make stops in New Jersey, Brooklyn, Philly, Toronto, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more, prior to its conclusion in early November.
